Chapter 23

Jean Luc sprang into action, dashing across the street, hopping over the gate to the blue house, and speeding through the yard like a blur. Time itself seemed to stretch so a second lasted ten. And in those ten seconds my mind showed me the multitude of horrible things that could be happening to Nicole right now.

But I got ahold of myself and started to run. I was through my gate, across the street, and in Nicole’s yard in only a couple of seconds, but had barely gotten to the porch when I heard the first scream. There was something strange about the sound, though. It seemed stifled. Muted. Difficult to hear. No one else on the street would have heard it.

I arrived at the door, placed my palm against the locking mechanism, pushed the magick through me, and urged the lock to turn. With a little finesse, and a lot of luck, I managed to unlock the door on the first try.

I barged inside and screamed for Nicole. My lungs were burning from the run, but my blood was running hot and my mind was clear. Hushed voices coming from the front room drew my attention. I dashed down the hall, turned through the arch, and bumped into Jean Luc’s back.

He turned his head to look at me, eyes wide with terror, but before he could speak Bernarde grabbed him by the shoulders and hurled him across the room into the opposite wall.

“Cheri,” he said, licking his lips and looking at me, “You will be a most delicious treat.”

Jean Luc appeared behind Bernarde, and he dug a fist into the other vampire’s jaw with a powerful crack.

“Madison, run!” he said.

Bernarde grunted loudly from the force of the impact and shoved Jean Luc with enough strength to make him stagger and fall. When Bernarde went to attack Jean Luc again, I backed away from the fight and went to look for Nicole.

There was no blood in the hall, none in the living room, and none in the kitchen. She had to be upstairs, so I ran up the stairs, climbing them two at a time, and searched the upper floor for the room which she was hiding in.

“Nicole?” I said, “It’s Maddie, where are you?”

“Go away!” Nicole’s muffled voice came from behind a closed door. I ran toward the sound, but with my third eye unlocked, I could see the glyphs of power hovering in front of it. She had warded the room with magick, and unless she dropped them, I wouldn’t be getting in.

“Nicole, no, it’s me!”

Something shattered downstairs. A mirror? A vase? Why couldn’t I hear them fight, hear them talk? Why did everything sound like I was underwater—or in a dream?

“How do I know it’s you?” she asked.

“Because it’s me! I should have stayed with you today when you asked me to. This wouldn’t have happened.”

I watched the spells fade from the door. A moment later, the latch unlocked, and the door opened. Nicole peered out. She was bleeding from a small gash on her forehead, but her neck was intact.
